DT 466 Crank No Start: What to Check Before Blaming the Injectors
Start With Oil, Not Fuel
Most DT 466E trucks that crank without starting have a high-pressure oil problem, not a fuel or injector problem. The engine uses HEUI injectors — Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injectors — that are fired by pressurized engine oil, not a mechanical pump. If the oil side of the system isn’t up to pressure, the injectors won’t spray a drop of fuel regardless of their condition.
That’s why chasing individual injectors first is usually the wrong move.
How the HEUI System Works
The DT 466E (the electronically controlled variant introduced in the mid-1990s) uses a high-pressure oil pump to bring engine oil up to several thousand PSI. That pressurized oil acts as the driving force behind each injector, physically pushing fuel into the cylinder at injection pressure. An IPR (Injection Pressure Regulator) valve controls how much pressure the system builds. An ICP (Injection Control Pressure) sensor reads actual system pressure and reports it back to the ECM.
No high-pressure oil means no injection. The fuel system could be perfect and the engine still won’t fire.
Step 1: Check Oil Level and Condition
Pull the dipstick before touching anything electronic. Low oil is a direct no-start cause on HEUI engines — the high-pressure oil pump can’t build pressure on air. Check the color while you’re there. Milky or foamy oil points to coolant contamination, which is a bigger separate problem that changes the entire diagnostic path.
Step 2: Test ICP Pressure
This is the single most useful test on a DT 466E no-start. You need an ICP test adapter and a gauge, or a scan tool capable of reading live ICP data. Crank the engine and watch pressure build. The engine generally needs ICP to climb into the hundreds of PSI before it will fire — the exact threshold varies by calibration year, but if it stays near zero while cranking, the oil side of the system is the problem.
Low ICP narrows the field considerably. You’re looking at a failed IPR valve, a failing high-pressure oil pump, or a leak somewhere in the high-pressure oil rail.
Step 3: The IPR Valve
The Injection Pressure Regulator is a solenoid valve that bleeds off excess oil to hold target ICP. When it fails — stuck open, failed coil, or worn seals — the system can’t build pressure and the engine won’t start. IPR valves are wear items on these engines. If you have good oil level and oil pump output but ICP stays flat, the IPR is the highest-probability culprit and the least expensive thing on the list to replace.
Step 4: Fuel Delivery
Even though injection is oil-actuated, fuel still has to reach the injectors. A clogged filter, a failing lift pump, or air in the fuel lines will all cause a no-start. Crack a fitting at the injection pump inlet and crank briefly — you want steady flow with no visible air bubbles. Fuel filters on the DT 466 get overlooked when people jump straight to electrical diagnosis. A clogged secondary filter is one of the cheaper and faster fixes on the no-start list.
Step 5: Injector Testing
If ICP is good and fuel delivery is confirmed, individual injectors come into the picture. HEUI failures split into two types: electrical (failed solenoid coil) and mechanical (worn or stuck plunger).
For a crank no-start, start with electrical testing. A multimeter across each injector solenoid connector will expose open or shorted coils. Consult the service manual for the resistance specification for your build year — a coil reading at zero or infinite resistance is a dead injector. On a running engine, a cylinder contribution test through a scan tool identifies weak or non-contributing cylinders without removing anything.
Other Causes Worth Ruling Out
- Crankshaft position sensor (CPS): The ECM needs a crank signal to command injection. A failed CPS can produce a crank no-start with little or no stored codes. Swapping it is inexpensive relative to the time saved.
- Camshaft position sensor: Loss of cam signal prevents the ECM from establishing injection timing. Same symptoms, same easy swap.
- ECM grounds: A corroded or loose ground strap at the block or chassis causes erratic behavior across every system. Clean and re-torque ground connections before spending money on sensors.
- Air in the fuel system: A cracked fuel line or a failing lift pump allows air ingestion. The engine may almost catch, stumble, then stop starting altogether.
Diagnostic Order When You’re Short on Tools
Start free: oil level, fuel filter condition, fuel line integrity. Then check for power and ground at the ECM and IPR solenoid. Work cheap-to-expensive. Injector removal on a DT 466 is a real job, and pulling a set of serviceable injectors to find that the IPR was the culprit all along is a frustrating and avoidable outcome.
