Installing a Transmission Cooler on a 2009 Jeep JK Wrangler

The JK’s factory transmission cooler lives inside the radiator as a small internal tank. Fine for normal highway use, but it can’t keep up during long trail runs in low range or any serious towing. An auxiliary cooler mounted in the grille opening solves that. You can do this yourself in an afternoon.

What You’ll Need

  • Auxiliary transmission cooler kit (with mounting straps, hose, and clamps)
  • Chrysler ATF+4 transmission fluid — specific to the 2009 JK 42RLE
  • Extra worm-gear hose clamps, 3/8-inch size
  • Utility knife or sharp hose cutter
  • Small flat-head screwdriver for the grille clips
  • Zip ties and shop rags

Budget around two hours. The hardest part is identifying the right line to cut, and that only takes a minute once you know what to look for.

How the Factory System Works

The 2009 JK 42RLE has two transmission lines running up to the driver’s side of the radiator. One carries hot fluid from the transmission into the internal cooler. The other returns cooled fluid back to the transmission. You’ll splice into the return line — the upper line on the driver’s side. The auxiliary cooler goes in series after the factory cooler, so fluid gets cooled twice before heading back to the transmission. You’re not bypassing anything, just adding capacity.

Step 1: Remove the Grille

Six plastic push-pin clips hold the grille along the top of the grille opening. Pry the center pin up first with a small screwdriver, then pull the clip body out. The grille pulls straight forward. Set it somewhere safe and you’ll have a clear view of the condenser and the space in front of it.

Step 2: Mount the Cooler

The kit includes metal strap brackets. Bolt one strap to each corner of the cooler, loop the free ends around the upper and lower crossbars of the grille opening, and tighten. Leave about an inch of clearance between the cooler and the condenser. Air needs to flow through both cores, so that gap is not optional.

On most JKs you won’t need to drill anything. The crossbars are solid enough to clamp onto. If a strap feels borderline, one zip tie through the strap slot adds real security without any drilling.

Step 3: Splice Into the Return Line

Find the rubber section of the upper transmission line on the driver’s side. You want the rubber portion, not the hard steel tube. Have rags ready before you cut; some ATF will drip out.

Cut the hose about four inches from a fitting so both ends have working slack. Push the supplied barbed fittings into each cut end and tighten the worm-gear clamps. Run hose from one cut end up to the cooler inlet, out the cooler outlet, and back down to the other cut end. Keep the fluid flowing in the factory direction: out of the radiator, through the auxiliary cooler, back to the transmission.

Route hoses away from the fan, belts, and anything hot. Secure with zip ties every six to eight inches.

Step 4: Top Off the Fluid

Reinstall the grille. Add ATF+4 to compensate for what dripped out and what’s now filling the new hose and cooler core. Start the engine, cycle through the gears slowly, then check the dipstick with the trans warm and in Park. Don’t substitute a different ATF spec on the 42RLE.

Step 5: Check for Leaks

Let the engine run until the transmission reaches normal operating temperature. Inspect every clamp connection. A slow drip usually just needs the clamp snugged a quarter-turn. Don’t overtighten on a cold hose; barbed fittings can split if you over-clamp before the rubber warms up and seats properly.

What Temperature Drop to Expect

JK owners who have done this mod report transmission temps dropping from over 200 degrees Fahrenheit to around 160 to 170 under the same conditions. The difference shows up most on slow trail work, sustained grades, or towing, where radiator airflow is limited and the factory cooler inside the radiator is already sharing duty with engine heat. That’s the scenario where the 42RLE runs hottest and benefits most from the added capacity.

About the Missing Instructions

Some auxiliary cooler kits, including the RT Off-Road unit sold by Extreme Terrain, ship without printed installation instructions. The kit is designed to fit multiple vehicles, so step-by-step guidance isn’t always included. Extreme Terrain’s advice to use a professional mechanic is overly cautious for this job. If you want a visual reference, Mishimoto produces a free installation video for the 2007–2011 JK (on their site and on YouTube) that covers the same grille opening and the same line-routing process. Most JK auxiliary cooler kits use the same 3/8-inch line diameter, so the video applies directly even if you’re using a different brand.
