Ricochet Deer: The Fatal Hazard You Can’t See Coming
When the Deer Wasn’t Even Your Problem
On the morning of November 5, 2025, James Genth of Decatur, Indiana was driving south on County Road 100 East in Adams County when a deer crossed into the road ahead. A Honda CRV traveling in the opposite direction struck the deer first, sending it airborne — directly into the path of Genth’s Dodge Ram. The deer crashed through his windshield. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
He never hit the deer.
That’s the part most drivers don’t process at first. We think about deer in terms of our own reactions — not braking fast enough, drifting into the animal’s path. But Genth was in the wrong place on a two-lane road at dawn in November, and a collision in the opposite lane killed him. No reaction time. No warning.
This Isn’t a Rare Fluke
Airborne and ricochet deer fatalities have happened in multiple states. In 2017, Ohio resident Amy Stoneburner was killed when a deer struck by an oncoming vehicle smashed through her car’s windshield. A near-identical crash in western Pennsylvania killed 73-year-old Michael Modjallal of Akron — a deer launched by another car came through his SUV’s upper windshield.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates roughly 200 people are killed in deer-vehicle collisions in the United States each year. That figure doesn’t break out how many involve the vehicle that first struck the animal versus a secondary vehicle hit by the airborne deer. The physics are simple: a large-bodied deer struck at highway speed can be launched at considerable height and velocity in unpredictable directions — including straight across the center line.
Why November Mornings Are Especially Dangerous
Genth’s accident happened at 6:41 a.m. on November 5. Both details matter.
Deer are most active at dawn and dusk — those hours account for a disproportionate share of collisions every year. Add November, and you’re in the peak of the rut, the white-tailed deer breeding season, when bucks are covering large distances and paying little attention to roads. October and November together account for nearly half of all annual deer-vehicle collisions in the US.
County Road 100 East is a two-lane rural road. Two-lane roads are the most dangerous configuration for ricochet accidents: vehicles pass at close range, there’s no median barrier to absorb a bouncing animal, and speeds are high enough to generate serious projectile energy even when the striking driver reacts correctly.
What You Can Actually Do
Speed is the single most controllable variable. A deer struck at 55 mph goes higher and farther than one struck at 35 mph. On county roads at dawn in November, there is no substitute for going slower — not deer whistles, not reflectors, not high beams alone.
High beams still help for spotting deer in your own lane, but they tell you nothing about what an oncoming car is about to hit. On narrow two-lane roads, it pays to watch what’s happening in front of oncoming headlights at a distance. An extra second of awareness doesn’t prevent the ricochet, but it can change whether you brake or not before the deer reaches you.
Braking technique matters primarily for the vehicle that first strikes the deer. Experts advise firm, controlled pressure rather than locking the wheels. Locked wheels push the nose of the vehicle downward during the skid, which can scoop a struck deer upward over the hood into the windshield — or launch it into traffic. Controlled braking keeps the vehicle’s profile level and tends to push the animal to the side instead.
Swerving is routinely more dangerous than hitting the deer directly. Swerving into oncoming traffic or off a graded road shoulder creates a high-speed loss-of-control scenario with worse odds than the collision itself.
What Doesn’t Work
Deer whistles — the small plastic devices mounted to grilles — have no credible evidence of reducing collisions. Deer may not detect the ultrasonic frequencies at road speeds, and even those that do don’t reliably flee from the sound. Safety researchers and the Insurance Information Institute have consistently found no meaningful protective effect.
Deer crossing signs mark zones of historically higher activity. They’re a useful reminder to slow down, not a guarantee you’re safe elsewhere on the same road.
The Specific Risk of Two-Lane Rural Roads at Dawn
The Adams County accident distills what makes this hazard so hard to defend against: a two-lane road narrow enough that an airborne deer has almost nowhere to go except the opposite lane; dawn, peak deer movement in low light; the November rut, when deer activity spikes; and two vehicles traveling toward each other, so the closing speed between the first vehicle and the deer is additive.
The only practical response is treating those roads, at those hours, during that season, as if a deer could come through your windshield from the oncoming side — because, as the Adams County accident shows, it can.
