The Short Answer

OEM trailer brake controllers have a reputation for being finicky, and most experienced towers eventually swap them out. A proportional aftermarket unit — like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 or P3 — gives you smoother stops, less brake wear, and one fewer thing to troubleshoot on the side of the road.

How Brake Controllers Actually Work

There are two types: time-delayed and proportional.

A time-delayed controller applies a fixed ramp of braking power every time you press the pedal. Easing to a stop at a light or hauling down a mountain — it sends the same signal to the trailer brakes regardless. Functional, but crude.

A proportional controller uses an internal accelerometer to read how hard the tow vehicle is actually decelerating. Trailer brake force matches that in real time. Gentle stop, gentle braking. Hard stop, hard braking. The trailer behaves like it’s part of the truck rather than fighting it.

For anything heavier than a pop-up camper, proportional is the right answer. The reduction in trailer push — especially in panic situations or on long grades — is significant.

Where OEM Controllers Fall Short

Integrated factory brake controllers like GM’s ITBC look good on paper. Buried in the dash, no extra wiring, reads trailer resistance values automatically. In practice, owners report the same recurring problems.

  • The system fails to detect a trailer is connected — more common in cold weather or when ground connections oxidize.
  • Error codes can cut braking output entirely while you’re actively towing. That’s a safety issue, not a nuisance.
  • When the module fails, dealer diagnosis is slow and the replacement cost is significant.
  • On GM trucks built after the 2013 model year, factory wiring changes make it harder to add a parallel aftermarket controller as a backup or replacement.

None of this means the factory controller is always junk. When it works properly, some owners prefer the seamless integration. But “when it works” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Tekonsha P2 vs P3: What Actually Separates Them

Both are proportional. Both use the same core inertia-sensor technology. Day-to-day braking performance is essentially identical between the two.

The P3 adds one thing the P2 lacks: the ability to store up to five separate trailer profiles. If you regularly pull different rigs — a horse trailer this weekend, a flatbed the next — the P3 lets you save and recall settings for each. The P2 has one set of settings. That’s the whole difference.

Both units include a three-level boost function that raises the accelerometer’s sensitivity for heavier loads, and a manual override lever for applying trailer brakes independently of the tow vehicle pedal.

For a single-trailer owner, the P2 covers everything at a lower price. The P3 earns its keep for multi-trailer setups or households with multiple drivers who each want their own feel dialed in.

The Mounting Detail That Changes Everything

This is the step people rush through.

Proportional controllers work via an internal accelerometer — so physical orientation is not optional. The unit must be mounted parallel to the direction of travel and level side to side. An angled or tilted mount causes the sensor to misread deceleration, and the trailer brakes either over-apply or under-apply. You end up with jerky stops that feel almost as bad as a time-delayed unit, and you wonder what you paid for.

State Law: The Weight Thresholds Vary More Than You’d Think

Most states require independent trailer brakes once the loaded trailer hits 3,000 pounds. But the floor is lower in several states: California and Nevada set the threshold at 1,500 pounds, New York at 1,000. A few states (Texas, Alaska) give more leeway on the upper end. When you cross state lines, the rules of the state you’re in apply.

A working, properly calibrated brake controller isn’t just a comfort upgrade. In most of the country, it’s a legal requirement.
