Where the Michelin Defender LTX Actually Fits
The Michelin Defender LTX M/S and its newer version, the Defender LTX M/S2, are among the most popular replacement tires for Grand Cherokee and comparable trucks and SUVs. It’s one of the only all-weather tires that approaches dedicated winter-tire performance on snow while holding up in warm-weather driving. The Goodyear WeatherReady 2 earned strong marks in recent testing as well.
For a Grand Cherokee owner in serious winter territory who wants one tire set year-round, the CrossClimate2 is the more defensible pick than the Defender LTX. It costs more. For most people who’d otherwise white-knuckle through a nor’easter, it’s worth the difference.
When to Just Run Dedicated Winter Tires
All-weather tires are a compromise. A good one for many drivers — but a compromise.
Dedicated winter tires, swapped onto a second set of wheels in October and back off in April, still offer the best cold-weather grip available. The economics work out better than people expect. A set of steel wheels is a one-time purchase. Winter tires wear only during winter months, so both sets last longer. For anyone driving unplowed rural roads, mountainous terrain, or anywhere that sees serious accumulation between storms, the seasonal swap usually makes sense.
