17-Inch Wheels for 35s on the Gen 2 Tundra: Offset, Backspacing, and the Width Trap
The Width Question: 8, 8.5, or 9 Inches?
Most forum discussion on 35-inch tire builds for the Gen 2 Tundra lands on 8 inches as the ideal rim width. The logic is bead retention when airing down — a narrower rim grips the bead tighter at lower pressures. That’s real. But the 8-inch number misses a harder constraint: the most popular 35×12.50R17 tires, including those from BFGoodrich, Cooper, and Mickey Thompson, spec 8.5 inches as their minimum approved rim width. Mounting a 35×12.5 on an 8-inch wheel puts you outside the manufacturer’s range. Sidewall geometry changes, handling suffers, and you’re off the warranty map if something goes wrong.
Eight-and-a-half inches is the floor, not a compromise. That puts the ICON Anza and Compression squarely in the right lane for most 35×12.5 tires. An 8-inch rim isn’t the conservative choice people assume it is.
Then there’s the FN Wheels option at 9 inches. The weight savings versus the ICON options are real and meaningful for daily driving. But 9 inches works directly against one of the most important goals in this specific build: airing down without beadlocks.
Why a Wider Rim Limits How Low You Can Air Down
A wider rim needs more internal air pressure to push the tire bead tight against the rim flange. On a narrower wheel, the tire sidewall curves inward more steeply and clamps the bead harder at lower PSI. Go too wide, and sidewall geometry flattens out, bead tension drops, and you hit the bead-pop threshold earlier than you expect.
Beadlocks exist specifically to solve this. Without them, the safe air-down floor on a 9-inch rim with a 35×12.5 tire is shallower than on an 8.5-inch rim. For a family desert truck with no beadlocks, this matters more than the weight savings on most outings.
The FN Wheels do include a knurled bead seat — a machined texture that grips the tire bead more aggressively at low pressures. It’s a genuine feature. But it doesn’t fully offset the physics of the wider rim, and it’s not a substitute for beadlocks on technical terrain.
Offset and Backspacing: Not the Same Number
These two measurements describe the same physical dimension from different directions. Offset is the distance in millimeters from the wheel’s centerline to its hub-mounting face. Backspacing is the distance in inches from that hub face to the rear lip of the wheel. They’re mathematically linked, but manufacturers publish both because different markets use different conventions.
Higher positive offset pushes the wheel inward, toward the frame. Lower or negative offset pushes it outward. The Gen 2 Tundra ships from the factory at around +60mm — significantly higher than any of the aftermarket options in this comparison. Dropping to +25mm means the wheel sits noticeably farther out from the hub, which is what opens up the clearance needed to run 35s cleanly on a lifted truck without cutting or flaring.
For an 8.5-inch wide wheel at +25mm offset, backspacing calculates to roughly 5.75 inches. That lines up exactly with what ICON publishes for the Anza and Compression. The math checks out.
The Fox 2.5 Backspacing Problem
This is where this particular build gets complicated. The Fox 2.5 coilover runs an external reservoir canister that sits in the wheel well, close to the inner edge of the wheel. With 12.5-inch-wide tires, Fox’s guidance is to keep backspacing at or below 5.5 inches to clear that canister and avoid contact.
All three wheel options in this comparison exceed that threshold:
- ICON Anza / Compression: 5.75 inches (0.25 inches over Fox’s guidance)
- FN Wheels: 6.00 inches (0.50 inches over)
- Method at +35mm on an 8.5-inch rim: approximately 6.13 inches (0.63 inches over)
That doesn’t make any of these an automatic no. Plenty of Gen 2 Tundra owners run the ICON options with Fox 2.5 setups without clearance issues, and a 0.25-inch overage is small enough that most get away with it. But do a physical mock-up before committing — especially with the FN Wheels and Method options, where the overage is larger. If staying strictly within Fox’s recommendation is a hard requirement, none of the three options here qualify as spec’d.
The Three Wheels Side by Side
- ICON Anza / Compression (17×8.5, +25mm, 5.75 in. BS, 30 lbs, 2,750 lb load): Engineered for Toyota-specific caliper and suspension clearance. The 110.1mm hub bore keeps it hub-centric on the Tundra. Anza has a concave profile with a stepped lip; Compression is flatter. Same performance spec either way. Closest to Fox’s backspacing guidance of the three.
- FN Wheels (17×9, +25mm, 6.00 in. BS, 24 lbs, 2,500 lb load): Lightest option here by a real margin. Knurled bead seat, extended-thread lug nut pockets designed for Toyota’s short wheel studs, flow-formed A356-T6 aluminum, JWL-T and VIA certified. The 2,500 lb load rating is the lowest of the group — worth checking against your tire’s load rating, since Tundra payload can push things.
- Method Race Wheels (17×8.5, +35mm, approx. 6.0-6.13 in. BS): The higher offset pushes the wheel more inward, which helps at full steering lock on the outside but increases backspacing and inner interference risk with Fox 2.5 hardware. Method offers several configurations for the Tundra with varying specs, so verify the exact numbers on the specific model before ordering.
Tire Width and Rim Width: Where This Leaves the Selection
A 35×12.50R17 mounted on a 9-inch rim sits toward the upper end of that tire’s approved rim width range. Sidewall profile gets a bit squarer, the contact patch widens slightly, and sidewall flex decreases. On flat desert terrain at 20 PSI this is invisible. On rocky terrain where you need maximum sidewall ballooning at 10-12 PSI, the narrower ICON setup will give you more flex and a larger footprint.
If your tire choice leans toward a 285/75R17 — which runs around 33.5 to 34 inches tall depending on brand, not a true 35 — an 8-inch rim is fine and bead retention improves. For a genuine 35×12.50R17, 8.5 inches is the minimum you should mount it on.
The Practical Call for This Build
Gen 2 Tundra, Fox 2.5 coilovers, 35×12.5 tires, no beadlocks, mostly pavement with desert weekends: the ICON Anza or Compression at 17×8.5 / +25mm / 5.75 in. BS is the most balanced of the three options. It sits closest to Fox’s backspacing guidance, satisfies tire manufacturer rim width minimums, and 30 lbs is an acceptable unsprung weight for a truck spending 95% of its miles on road.
The FN Wheels are worth a second look if your Fox 2.5 setup has clearance to spare and your trail use stays in the moderate-air-down range. Mock it up first. If the canister clears, the 6-lb weight advantage per corner adds up. Just don’t pick the 9-inch rim expecting it to help you air down lower — it does the opposite.
