WJ Wheels on a WK Grand Cherokee: What Actually Decides the Fit

The specs that actually match

Both the WJ (1999–2004) and WK (2005–2010) Jeep Grand Cherokee use a 5×127 mm bolt pattern — written 5×5 in Jeep forum shorthand. Factory 17×7.5-inch wheels on both generations run the same offset and backspacing figures. On paper, those numbers line up clean.

The brake package is what actually decides it

The WK was sold with two distinct front brake setups: standard duty (SD) and heavy duty (HD). SD uses smaller rotors and calipers. HD steps up to 350 mm front rotors with physically larger calipers to match.

HD brakes will not clear a 17-inch wheel. Any 17-inch rim — WJ or otherwise — cannot fit around the HD caliper. Minimum clearance requires at least 18 inches of wheel diameter.

WJ factory wheels top out at 17 inches. That makes the HD-brake question binary: if your WK has them, WJ wheels won’t work, period.

How to tell which brake package you have

Engine is the clearest signal. V6 WKs run SD brakes. Most V8 Hemi and diesel builds get HD — but there are trim-level exceptions, so the definitive check is your door-jamb build sticker. Look for brake sales code BR6, which designates the HD package.

WJ wheel sizes and how they play out

WJ wheels came from the factory in 16×7 and 17×7.5. Here’s how each maps to a WK:

  • 17×7.5 WJ wheels on an SD-brake WK: clean fit. Same offset, same bolt pattern, compatible dimensions. This is the swap that works without drama.
  • 16×7 WJ wheels on an SD-brake WK: tighter. The smaller diameter leaves less room around the caliper. Most SD setups will clear, but aftermarket brake pads or any caliper movement can push you out of spec. Test-fit before committing.
  • Any WJ wheel on an HD-brake WK: won’t work. The calipers are simply too large for a 17-inch barrel.

Running the driveway test correctly

Jack up one corner, pull the stock wheel, slide the WJ rim on. Check for any contact around the caliper body and mounting bracket. That part is quick.

What often gets skipped: static clearance is not the same as dynamic clearance. After test-fitting, load the suspension — let the vehicle settle on its own weight with the wheel loosely bolted, or press down on the fender to compress the suspension by hand. A rim that clears at ride height can make contact under hard braking or over a bump when the suspension compresses.

If you already know your brake package going in, you’ll know before pulling a single lug nut whether this swap has any chance at all.
