Lifting a Crew Cab S10: What You Actually Need at 6 Inches
At 6 inches, a Crew Cab S10 lift is not a drop-in job. Brake lines are the safety issue everyone talks about. The CV geometry problem is what actually costs people money, repeatedly, after the build.
Make Sure Your Kit Is Spec’d for Crew Cab
The S10 crew cab runs a longer wheelbase and different frame geometry than the extended cab. Most popular 6-inch kits — including several widely sold Rough Country S10 kits — are designed for the extended or standard cab. Ordering the wrong one is an easy and expensive mistake.
Before anything else, verify the part number explicitly covers the crew cab body. The ZR5 is an appearance package on top of the crew cab 4×4 — roof rack, step bars, fender flares, bed bars, ZR5 decals — so mechanically it shares the same IFS front suspension as any other S10 crew cab 4×4. Nothing about the ZR5 trim changes what the lift requires.
Brake Lines: The Safety Item That Cannot Be Skipped
At 6 inches, stock brake lines are too short. During full suspension travel they go tight, and a line under tension will either cut against an edge or eventually pull loose. Either way, you lose braking.
Extended brake lines are the fix — not just repositioning a bracket. Owners who use only a lift spindle or only a spring lift sometimes manage with stock lines, but combining both components to reach 6 inches means you need extended lines. No exception.
While you’re at it, check the ABS wiring. It runs a similar path to the brake lines and needs to be extended or rerouted at the same time. Easy to miss, annoying to fix after the fact.
CV Joints and Axle Breakage: The Real Repeat Expense
Axles do break easier on a lifted S10 — but understanding why matters more than the warning. The stock IFS setup puts the CV joints at their angular limit when you raise the truck 6 inches without correcting the geometry. Every bump, every articulation, and the joints are at or past their design range. Clicking and popping come first. Then failure.
Differential drop brackets are the fix. They lower the front differential housing, which brings the CV operating angle back into an acceptable range. Rough Country and BDS both make them for the S10 platform. Aftermarket upper control arms help further — they allow the ball joints to operate at less extreme angles through full suspension travel, and typically use heavier-duty ball joints than the factory stamped-steel arms.
Running upgraded heavy-duty CV axles is a reasonable idea, but they’re a band-aid without the geometry correction first. Drop brackets, then axles if you still want the extra insurance.
Driveshaft and Pinion Angle on the Crew Cab
The rear driveshaft needs attention too. Lifting the body changes the angle between the transmission output and the rear differential pinion. On a crew cab S10, the rear driveshaft is a two-piece unit with a carrier bearing — two U-joints to manage instead of one.
The transmission-side angle and the pinion angle should be equal and opposite so the U-joints cancel each other out. When they don’t, you get vibration at highway speed and accelerated U-joint wear. A carrier bearing shim is often needed to bring the angles back into spec after a significant lift. An inclinometer or a phone app with a tilt sensor lets you measure the actual angles before buttoning everything up.
Alignment After the Build
Factory alignment specs assume stock ride height. After a 6-inch lift, you need a shop that works on lifted trucks regularly. Not every alignment shop does. Tell them the lift height before you book. A post-lift alignment done to factory specs will eat tires and ball joints quickly.
If you installed aftermarket upper control arms, ask specifically about caster correction. Getting caster right makes a bigger difference to straight-line stability and tire wear than most people expect coming out of a lift.
Tires at 6 Inches
A properly installed 6-inch lift on the S10 can fit up to about 265/75R16 on a 16×8 wheel without rubbing. That’s roughly a 31.6-inch diameter tire — a real step up from factory that fills the wheel wells well. Exact fitment depends on your fender geometry and whether you’ve trimmed.
