Heat Shield Sleeves for Wiring Near Exhaust: Which Material Actually Works
The material decision matters more than the brand
If you’re routing wiring near an exhaust pipe or header, the sleeve you pick needs to match the type of heat it’ll actually face. That’s almost always radiant heat (the infrared energy that bakes everything nearby), not direct flame contact. Get that distinction right and the rest falls into place.
Fiberglass vs. aluminized vs. silicone-coated
Plain fiberglass sleeving is the baseline. It’s flexible, inexpensive, and handles direct heat reasonably well, making it fine for general wire looming in a warm engine bay. What it doesn’t do well is reflect radiant energy; it absorbs it instead, so the wire inside can still get cooked if it’s sitting close to a hot exhaust surface.
Aluminized fiberglass sleeves (the ones with a shiny metallic outer layer) are the better fit for exhaust-proximity installs. They reflect over 90% of incoming radiant heat rather than soaking it up. DEI’s Heat Sheath is the most commonly referenced example: fiberglass inner construction bonded to an aluminized face, with direct heat resistance around 500°F and much higher radiant protection. That reflective surface is doing the work.
Silicone-coated fiberglass sits in a slightly different niche. The silicone skin adds oil and chemical resistance plus better abrasion tolerance, which is useful on fuel lines or hydraulic hoses that might rub against a bracket. Temperature handling is comparable to plain fiberglass, but the coating makes the sleeve tougher in a dirty environment. For exhaust-adjacent wiring specifically, these work fine, though the radiant-reflection advantage of an aluminized sleeve isn’t there.
For extreme cases such as headers on forced-induction builds or anything sitting very close to a catalytic converter under sustained load, DEI and others offer titanium-composite sleeves rated for much higher direct heat. Overkill for a stock exhaust setup, but worth knowing about if your situation is more severe.
Reading temperature ratings honestly
Heat sleeve specs typically list two numbers: direct heat resistance and radiant heat resistance. Direct means the sleeve is practically touching a hot surface. Radiant means it’s absorbing infrared from something nearby. Most quality aluminized sleeves handle around 500°F direct and reflect radiant energy into four-digit territory. Know which number applies to your actual install before buying.
For a typical street car with stock or mild exhaust, wiring running a few inches from a pipe is almost always a radiant heat problem. You want reflection, not just insulation.
Installation details that change the result
Seal the ends. This is where most installs fall short. Open sleeve ends let hot air get trapped inside, turning the sleeve into a small oven around your wiring instead of a shield. Close each end tightly using high-temp tape or stainless steel locking ties. Standard nylon zip ties can melt in severe heat applications.
Leave a bit of slack. Sleeves get stiffer under sustained heat, and if the wire has no room to move at all, the ends of the sleeve become wear points over time. A small service loop at each end protects both the wire and the sleeve material.
For tight bends in a congested engine bay, slit-loom aluminized sleeves are much easier to retrofit than slip-on versions. Open the slit, lay the wire in, close the slit with heat-resistant tape. No need to disconnect anything first.
If clearance is the root problem, a sleeve buys time but doesn’t fix it. Even half an inch of additional separation from the exhaust surface makes a real difference in radiant exposure. Re-route first when that’s an option.
Common questions
Can I wrap the exhaust pipe instead of sleeving the wires?
Both is better. Exhaust wrap on the pipe contains heat at the source; a sleeve on the wiring provides a second layer of defense. Either alone works, but both together is more reliable.
How close is too close for wiring near exhaust?
No hard universal number, but most harness builders aim for at least an inch of clearance. With a quality aluminized sleeve installed and sealed correctly, wiring can tolerate closer proximity. The sleeve is not a substitute for sensible routing.
Does sleeve color matter?
No. Color is cosmetic. What matters is the outer material: aluminized means reflective, silicone or matte fiberglass means absorptive. Check the construction, not the shade.
