P0EA7 Means Your Auxiliary Cooling System Isn’t Performing

P0EA7 is an OBD-II code for “Auxiliary Cooling System Performance.” It turns up most often on turbocharged FCA/Stellantis vehicles — the 2019–2023 Jeep Cherokee with the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder is the most common example, but it also appears on the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, various SRT and Hellcat platforms, and some hybrid vehicles like the Volvo XC90 T8. The code sets when the PCM determines that the auxiliary coolant pump isn’t delivering the flow that was commanded.

A major source of confusion: this is not the main engine water pump. It cools a completely separate circuit — the charge air cooler (CAC) loop — and factory service documentation calls it the charge air cooler coolant pump. Searching “secondary water pump” returns thin or mixed results. “CAC pump” or “charge air cooler coolant pump” combined with your year and engine is far more productive.

What the Charge Air Cooler Cooling Circuit Does

On the 2.0L turbocharged Cherokee, the charge air cooler is liquid-cooled rather than air-cooled. Compressed air from the turbocharger passes through the CAC, where circulating coolant pulls heat out before that air enters the intake manifold. Cooler, denser intake charge means more power and reduced knock risk at a given boost level.

This circuit runs entirely independent of the primary engine cooling system. It has its own reservoir, its own small radiator at the front of the vehicle, its own coolant temperature sensor, and its own electric pump. The pump is a smart device — it communicates with the PCM over a LIN bus rather than just spinning at a fixed voltage. The PCM sends a speed command; the pump reports back its actual current draw. When those two values don’t match, P0EA7 sets.

Common Causes of P0EA7

  • Low coolant in the CAC reservoir. Check this first. The CAC has its own reservoir — separate from the main coolant overflow tank. Low fluid causes the pump to cavitate and pull abnormal current, which is exactly what trips the code.
  • Air trapped in the CAC circuit. Even with sufficient coolant, air pockets in the lines disrupt pump performance. The system needs to be properly bled after any repair that opens the circuit.
  • Failed CAC coolant pump. The electric motor or the internal control module inside the pump can fail outright. These pumps have shown a pattern of early failure on the 2.0T Cherokee, with many owners reporting trouble well before 100,000 miles.
  • Wiring or connector damage. The LIN bus signal runs on a single wire. Corrosion at the pump connector, a pushed-back terminal, or damaged insulation can break communication and trigger P0EA7 even when the pump itself is fine.
  • Restriction in the CAC circuit. Less common — but a kinked hose or internal scale buildup can restrict flow enough to produce abnormal pump current readings.

Diagnosing P0EA7 Step by Step

1. Check the CAC Reservoir

The secondary coolant reservoir is smaller than the main overflow tank, usually positioned near the front of the engine bay on the Cherokee. Check the level with the engine cold. If it’s low, top it off with the correct coolant type — check your owner’s manual, since the CAC circuit may specify a different mix than the primary system — and bleed the system before doing anything else.

2. Inspect the Connector and Wiring

Unplug the CAC pump connector and look for corrosion, bent or pushed pins, and damaged wire insulation. This connector lives in a hot section of the engine bay. Clean it with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and re-seat it firmly. Clear the code and retest before going further.

3. Command the Pump with a Scan Tool

A bi-directional scan tool lets you activate the CAC pump directly through active tests. Command it on — you should hear it spin. Silence with good wiring usually means a dead pump. If it spins but the code returns, focus on coolant level and air bleeding rather than the pump itself.

4. Check for LIN Bus Communication Faults

A dealer-level scanner such as wiTECH lets you read LIN bus communication status alongside P0EA7. A companion LIN bus fault pointing to the CAC pump strongly suggests a wiring problem. Worth confirming before spending money on a replacement pump.

Replacing the CAC Coolant Pump

If the pump has failed, the OEM replacement for the 2019–2023 Jeep Cherokee is Mopar part number 68259097AB, available through Mopar dealerships and the Mopar online parts store. Replacement is more accessible than many owners expect — the CAC pump doesn’t require A/C system evacuation or removal of major drivetrain components. Drain the CAC circuit, swap the pump, refill, and bleed.

The main engine water pump on the 2.0T Cherokee is a completely different job. It’s buried deeper and requires removing A/C refrigerant lines to access it, which drives labor cost significantly higher. P0EA7 is not a main water pump fault. Confirming which circuit actually has the problem before starting work saves a lot of time and money.

Two Pumps, Two Systems — Don’t Confuse Them

A lot of forum confusion and some shop misdiagnoses come from treating the CAC pump and the main water pump as interchangeable. They aren’t. Different location, different circuit, different part number, different repair scope. P0EA7 is strictly about the auxiliary CAC circuit. If you’re also seeing engine overheating or a P0128 alongside P0EA7, that’s a separate primary cooling system fault requiring its own diagnosis.

Is It Safe to Drive With P0EA7?

Short, low-load trips won’t immediately cause engine damage. But the CAC circuit’s job is keeping intake charge temperatures in check when the turbo is working hard. Without it functioning correctly, the ECU pulls ignition timing to protect against knock — a real, measurable power loss even if it’s hard to feel on a casual drive. Under sustained load or in hot weather, the effect compounds.
