What Makes the LH7 Delete Different

The 2018–2019 Chevrolet Equinox diesel uses the LH7 1.6L turbo four-cylinder — a Euro-derived engine originally developed by Opel. Stock figures sit around 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. It came loaded with a full modern emissions stack: EGR, DPF, selective catalytic reduction with DEF injection, and a catalytic converter. That’s four systems, not one, and each needs its own hardware approach.

Most delete content online is written around big American diesels — 6.7 Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke. The LH7 is smaller, more Euro-flavored, and its sensor architecture is denser than older VW TDI hardware. That detail matters when you’re sourcing parts.

The Full Delete Stack

  • DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter): Catches soot from the exhaust stream. Removal needs a downpipe kit — Nat’s Performance makes one specific to the LH7 Equinox/Terrain/Cruze family — plus a tune that disables regen cycles and suppresses the associated fault codes.
  • EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation): Routes exhaust back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures. Addressed with a block-off plate and a tune command. Carbon buildup from a leaky or stuck EGR valve is a documented long-term reliability concern on modern diesels, which is why this delete gets a lot of attention beyond just power gains.
  • DEF/SCR system: Urea injection to treat exhaust NOx downstream. Bypassing it eliminates the refill cost and the progressive derate warnings that trigger when the tank runs dry. The DEF module needs more than a tune command to fully disable — more on that below.
  • Catalytic converter: Last component in the exhaust chain. Bridged out with a pipe section. Nat’s Performance and Great White North Diesel both offer LH7-specific exhaust kits for this step.

The Sensor Bypass Step Most Guides Skip

A quality tune — even a custom CCS file flashed via EFILive — won’t silence every fault on an LH7 delete. Physical NOx sensors and a particulate matter sensor report independently of what the ECM expects to see. Without bypass plugs (sometimes called CAN bus plugs), those sensors keep sending data and persistent fault codes cycle back even after you’ve cleared them.

The DEF module also requires a wiring bypass, not just a tune command, to fully kill the derate logic. Some shops bundle these components into a kit; others treat them as a separate line item. If you’re sourcing parts from multiple vendors, confirm what’s actually included before ordering. Missing one piece means a fault loop you’ll be chasing after everything else is bolted on.

How the EFILive Tune Process Works

The CCS tune from Dirty Diesel Customs ships on an EFILive AutoCal V3. You connect it to your OBD-II port, pull a stock read from your specific ECM, and send that file to the tuner. They build a calibration from your actual read and return the flash. Stock read first — always. A tune built on a generic base file rather than your specific ECM is a shortcut that creates headaches down the line.

The AutoCal handles the flash on its own. You only need a Windows computer if you want to use EFILive Scan and Tune for datalogging or custom parameter adjustments afterward.

Emissions deletes remain federally illegal under Section 203 of the Clean Air Act. That law has not changed.

What did change: in January 2026, the Department of Justice issued a memo directing federal prosecutors to stop pursuing criminal cases against individuals who install or sell defeat devices. No federal indictments, no criminal exposure from the DOJ on this issue going forward. That’s a real shift from even a year ago — previously, shop owners and installers faced potential prison time, and the DOJ had actively prosecuted cases.

It is not a green light. EPA civil enforcement continues. Fines for individual vehicle owners can reach roughly $45,000 per violation. EPA investigations have not stopped. State enforcement is entirely separate from the DOJ memo — California, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland all actively enforce emissions rules, and a deleted vehicle will fail inspection in those states regardless of what federal prosecutors are or aren’t doing.

The Diesel Truck Liberation Act, introduced in both the House and Senate in early 2026, would strip EPA authority to enforce Clean Air Act tampering provisions and effectively legalize deletes nationally. As of mid-2026 it’s stalled in committee without significant movement. Worth watching, but it’s not law yet.

LH7 vs. the Old TDI Platform

Pre-2015 TDI cars have simpler emissions hardware and a large, mature aftermarket behind them. Deletes on that platform are practically plug-and-play at this point. The LH7 is newer, the sensor suite is more complex, and the pool of shops with genuine LH7-specific experience is smaller. That doesn’t make the delete harder to execute — it means tuner selection matters more. Make sure whoever you’re buying from has done LH7s specifically, not just similar-looking GM diesel applications.
