1990 Toyota Pickup 22R Engine: Cylinder Head Rear Plate Torque Spec and Free FSM Alternatives

Finding the 22R Cylinder Head Rear Plate Torque Spec Without Paying Collector Prices for a Manual

The cylinder head rear plate on the Toyota 22R and 22RE sits at the back of the cylinder head, sealing the rear camshaft journal. Per the factory service manual, those bolts torque to 9 ft-lbs (12 N·m). They’re small 6mm fasteners threading into aluminum — easy to snap if you skip the torque wrench and go by feel.

If you’re rebuilding a 1990 Toyota pickup with the 22R and need a full reference for the job, here’s what you’ll actually reach for.

22R and 22RE Torque Specs at a Glance

These specs apply to the 22R (carbureted) and 22RE (fuel-injected) engines used in 1985–1995 Toyota pickups and 4Runners. Cross-check against LCE Performance’s tech page or BashPi before torquing anything down — both compile these directly from the FSM.

  • Cylinder head bolts: 58 ft-lbs (78 N·m), tightened in factory sequence over three passes
  • Cylinder head rear plate: 9 ft-lbs (12 N·m)
  • Camshaft bearing caps: 14–15 ft-lbs
  • Camshaft sprocket bolt: 58 ft-lbs
  • Timing cover — 6mm bolts: 8 ft-lbs; 8mm bolts: 15 ft-lbs; 10mm bolts: 25 ft-lbs
  • Intake and exhaust manifold: 33 ft-lbs each
  • Rear main seal housing: 13–15 ft-lbs
  • Flywheel to crankshaft: 65 ft-lbs
  • Crankshaft pulley bolt: 116 ft-lbs
  • Connecting rod caps: 51 ft-lbs
  • Main bearing caps: 76 ft-lbs

What the Cylinder Head Rear Plate Actually Is

It’s a thin aluminum plate — sometimes labeled the rear end plate in parts diagrams — bolted to the very back face of the cylinder head. Its job is to close off the rear camshaft bore and seal oil inside the head. The plate comes off with the head during a head pull and goes back on with RTV silicone rather than a cut gasket.

At 6mm, these are small bolts. 9 ft-lbs doesn’t feel like much. Use a hand torque wrench, not an impact. Overtightening strips the threads in the aluminum head and turns a five-minute task into a helicoil job.

Getting the FSM Without Paying Collector Prices

Sealed factory service manuals for older Toyotas command steep prices on Amazon because sellers treat them as NOS collector items. You don’t need the shrink-wrapped copy to do the job right.

  • The Toyota 21R/22R/22RC Engine Repair Manual (Pub. No. 36056E) is available as a scanned PDF on Scribd. It covers torque specs, sequences, clearances, and exploded diagrams for the full 22R family.
  • CarManualsDirect sells printed reprint editions of the factory 22R/22RE/22R-TE rebuild manual — a fraction of what an original costs.
  • LCE Performance publishes a free torque specification tech article covering every spec you’re likely to need during a 22R rebuild. It’s bookmarkable and fast to scan mid-job from a phone.
  • BashPi has a compiled 22RE torque settings page that’s clean and printer-friendly — worth keeping next to the bench.
  • For the full vehicle FSM covering the whole truck beyond just the engine, used Toyota pickup service manuals from the late 1980s and early 1990s show up on eBay regularly in usable condition, often for well under the Amazon prices. Search your exact model year with “Toyota Truck Service Manual” and set a saved search alert.

Assembly Notes for the Rear Plate

No cut gasket on the cylinder head rear plate. Clean both mating surfaces, apply a thin bead of grey RTV silicone (Toyota 08826-00100 or an equivalent like Permatex Ultra Grey), and let it tack slightly before bolting down. Torque to 9 ft-lbs, then leave it alone for at least 30 minutes before adding oil.

One note on the head bolt side of the job: the 22R factory procedure doesn’t require a retorque after the first heat cycle, but many rebuilders do it anyway on a used head or a freshly decked block. Ten minutes, and worth the peace of mind on an engine you’re putting back together properly.
