What “Check Brake System” Usually Means on a 2013 F-150 EcoBoost
If you’ve got a hard, stiff brake pedal paired with a Check Brake System warning on a 3.5L EcoBoost F-150, the electric vacuum pump is the first thing to investigate. That’s not a guess: it’s the most common failure path on these trucks, and the intermittent pattern — clears after sitting, fails again on the highway — is exactly how a dying pump behaves.
Why the 3.5L EcoBoost Needs an Electric Vacuum Pump
Standard brake boosters run off engine vacuum. Naturally aspirated motors produce that vacuum during the intake stroke and feed the booster continuously. Turbocharged engines don’t work that way. The forced-induction setup means the intake manifold has little usable vacuum, especially when the turbo is under load.
Ford’s answer was a dedicated electric vacuum pump (EVP) that runs independently to keep the booster pressurized. When the EVP works, braking feels normal. When it drops out, the booster loses its assist and the pedal goes stiff. The truck still stops, but it takes real leg effort. A Check Brake System alert follows almost immediately.
The Recall — and Why an April 2013 Build Falls Outside It
Ford issued Safety Recall 16S24 (NHTSA ID 16V345000) in 2016 for a related but distinct problem: the master cylinder rear cup seal can fail, letting brake fluid migrate into the booster instead of pressurizing the lines. Loss of fluid from the primary reservoir causes a complete loss of front brake function.
The vehicles covered were 2013-2014 F-150s built between August 1, 2013 and August 31, 2014 with the 3.5L engine — roughly 225,000 trucks. A truck purchased new in April 2013 was almost certainly assembled before that window opens. Same engine, same general brake architecture, different manufacturing date. That gap has left a lot of owners in a frustrating spot: identical symptoms to the recalled trucks, but the VIN doesn’t qualify.
There’s also a separate EVP recall (15N05) that covered 2011-2012 EcoBoost F-150s specifically for electric vacuum pump failures. The 2013 model uses a different pump configuration and didn’t receive the same blanket coverage.
Two Failures That Look Similar but Aren’t
The right repair depends on which problem you actually have, so it helps to separate them.
- Electric vacuum pump failure: The pedal is stiff and heavy. You can push it through, but it takes real effort to slow the truck. The booster has no assist at all. The warning light comes on, the pump may recover after the engine sits, then fails again miles down the road. OBD-II code P258B (Electronic Vacuum Pump Performance) is the one to watch for.
- Master cylinder rear seal failure: Brake fluid moves internally from the primary reservoir into the booster rather than pressurizing the lines. The pedal may sink or travel farther than it should. Fluid disappears from the reservoir. Front braking can be lost entirely. This is the defect that recall 16S24 was written for.
A stiff pedal that takes effort but doesn’t sink points toward the vacuum pump. A pedal that drops or goes soft underfoot points toward the master cylinder. The intermittent pattern — hard pedal, clears after sitting, returns at speed — is the EVP’s signature.
Reading the Code
An OBD-II scan is the fastest first step. P258B flags the EVP circuit directly. Basic generic scanners can miss manufacturer-specific codes, so a unit that reads enhanced Ford codes gives a more complete picture than a bare-bones reader from a parts store. If P258B shows up, the diagnosis is essentially done.
Also check fuse F64 in the Battery Junction Box before anything else. A blown fuse knocks the EVP completely offline and produces these exact symptoms. It takes thirty seconds to look and costs nothing.
Next Steps
Avoid highway driving until this is resolved. A stiff pedal is workable at low speed; a brake failure at 70 mph is a different situation entirely.
Bring the truck to a Ford dealer and ask for the full brake system diagnostic. Reference recall 16S24 by name even if your VIN falls outside the manufacturing window. Some dealers will file for goodwill repairs when a failure mirrors a known recall defect, particularly if the truck has been regularly serviced at Ford. It’s worth asking directly rather than assuming the full cost is yours to absorb.
If the EVP is confirmed bad, replacement is the fix. If the master cylinder seal failed and fluid contaminated the booster, both parts typically need to be replaced. A contaminated booster won’t work correctly even with a new master cylinder feeding it.
