How to Remove the Drive Belt on a 2010 Polaris Ranger 800 EBS: Secondary Clutch Guide
The 2010 Polaris Ranger 800 EBS has a tied-type secondary clutch — that single design difference is why the belt change feels nothing like the procedure on a standard Ranger, and why trying to force the sheaves apart by hand gets you nowhere.
Why the EBS Secondary Clutch Won’t Spread Like a Normal One
On a conventional CVT, the secondary (driven) clutch opens under belt tension as the primary shifts. The EBS version is spring-loaded closed. It works alongside a one-way bearing inside the primary clutch to deliver engine braking all the way to a complete stop — not just down to a few mph like non-EBS machines do. Because the sheaves are engineered to stay closed under load, you cannot open them by hand or lever them apart with a screwdriver the way you might on a standard secondary. The dedicated belt removal tool is the only method that works.
The Tool: Part Number 2877408
Polaris includes the belt removal tool (PN 2877408) in the factory tool kit stored under the seat. If yours is missing, Starting Line Products and other aftermarket suppliers make compatible versions. Do not substitute a flat screwdriver or a shop pry bar — the tool is shaped to contact the moveable sheave face at the correct angle, and a blunt substitute will score it.
Removing the Belt, Step by Step
- Park on flat ground, chock all four wheels, and put the transmission in Neutral.
- Remove the seat and the storage container underneath it.
- Disconnect the PVT air outlet duct hose. Remove the clutch cover bolts with a 10mm socket and pull the cover.
- Mark the belt’s direction of rotation with chalk or a paint marker before you pull it. Install the new one the same way.
- Insert the belt removal tool into the secondary clutch. It must sit dead square against the moveable sheave face — this is exactly where EBS belt changes go sideways. Even a few degrees off and the tool will not open the sheaves; it just sits there. Reset it flush and try again.
- Once correctly seated, rotate the tool toward the clutch. The sheaves will spread.
- Walk the belt off the secondary, then lift it free from the primary.
Installing the Replacement Belt
Loop the new belt over the primary drive clutch first. Keep the removal tool in the secondary holding the sheaves open while you work the belt on. Rotate the clutch by hand and walk the belt onto the secondary sheaves, then pull the tool out once it’s seated.
After installation, spin the driven clutch and belt together 5 to 7 complete revolutions by hand before the cover goes back on. This seats the belt properly and keeps it from riding on an edge during the first run.
A practical trick that works well on these machines: thread a pry bar through the A-arm mount hole in the rear subframe and lever against the belt’s outside ribs to push it up onto the secondary. Especially useful when you’re doing this trailside without a second set of hands.
Using the Correct Belt
The EBS secondary requires a different belt from the standard Ranger 800. Polaris OEM part number 3211113 is the EBS-specific belt. It runs cooler than the non-EBS part, which matters because the EBS secondary keeps more constant tension on the belt than a conventional secondary does. Fitting the wrong belt wears it faster and can cause early failure on steep downhill terrain where the EBS system works hardest.
Clean the Housing Before You Button Up
Before the clutch cover goes back on, blow out the entire housing and both PVT ducts with compressed air. A failed belt leaves rubber debris in every corner of the housing. Any of that debris finding its way into the new belt’s running path will cut its life short. Two minutes with an air nozzle now saves a repeat repair later.
