Towing on a Diesel Tune: EGTs, Trans Temps, and Which Power Level to Actually Use

Which tune should you actually tow on?

The short answer: the lowest tune that still holds speed on grades without constant downshifting. That’s different for every rig, every route, and every load — but it’s almost never your highest power level. And sometimes a lower-numbered tune creates more problems than it solves.

Performance diesel tunes typically stack in increments — 0, 20, 40, 60, 80hp over stock, sometimes higher. The instinct is to run the biggest tune because more power means easier climbing. The problem is that more fuel also means more heat, and the engine doesn’t know you’d rather cruise at manageable EGT than pull hard and cook the turbo.

EGT: The Number That Actually Matters

Exhaust gas temperature is the clearest signal you have that your engine is working within safe limits. At highway cruise on flat ground towing a camper, EGTs should be relatively calm. It’s the sustained climbs where they move fast.

Most diesel engines start to show accelerated wear with prolonged exposure above roughly 1,200–1,400°F, depending on the platform. A Duramax handles heat differently than a 6.7 Cummins or a 6.7 Power Stroke, but the principle holds across all of them: brief spikes are fine, sustained high temps cause accelerated piston, ring, and turbo wear. Brief spikes on a grade are expected. What you’re managing is whether the number climbs and then stabilizes, or just keeps climbing.

If you’re two miles into a five-mile grade and EGTs are still rising, you’re in a losing battle. Slow down or downshift. The engine will thank you.

Practical EGT habits while towing

  • EGT climbing and not leveling off — back out of the throttle or downshift before it gets critical
  • Sustained high temps on a long grade — consider dropping a tune level for mountain sections
  • EGT spiking under what feels like light throttle — often a sign the dead spot is forcing you to punch past it

Trans Temps and Why Tune Choice Affects Them

Transmission temperature is the other number worth watching. Factory calibrations are sized around stock torque loads. Add 60 or 80hp and the torque increase hits the trans hard, especially on grades where it’s already cycling between lockup and slip.

Here’s the part most people miss: a tune with a bad throttle dead spot can actually hurt trans temps more than running one level higher. When the pedal has a dead zone — say, 45–85% travel — the truck either underperforms or the driver pushes past the dead spot and suddenly has more throttle than intended. The trans reacts by cycling between gears. That cycling generates heat. A cleaner tune at a slightly higher power level that holds speed steadily can run the trans cooler in practice than a lower tune with a frustrating pedal map.

The Dead Spot Problem Explained

Throttle dead spots in diesel tunes are common. They happen when the tune’s pedal-position-to-fueling map has a gap — often a leftover from stock traction-control calibration or an attempt to keep the tune streetable at low load. In a 40hp tune, a dead band sitting between 45–85% pedal travel lands exactly where most people drive when towing: partial throttle trying to hold speed on a grade.

The result: you’re either not holding speed, or you’ve punched through the dead spot and now you’re accelerating harder than intended. The trans reacts and starts hunting gears. That hunting is what makes the tow feel worse than it should, and it’s also what drives up trans temps and EGTs simultaneously.

If your 60hp tune has a better pedal map at those partial-throttle inputs — cleaner fueling, more predictable response — it can actually tow calmer than the 40hp tune even though it’s making more power. The gauges reflect the difference.

Many tune packages come with weight-based recommendations — “use tune #2 under 8,000 lbs” or similar. These are conservative guidelines, not hard limits. The tuner is trying to keep you from pushing EGTs into dangerous territory with a heavy load and a high-power tune on a long grade.

Running a higher tune over that threshold isn’t automatically dangerous. It does put more responsibility on the driver. Watch the gauges. If EGTs are climbing and not stabilizing, back off. If trans temps are pushing past comfortable, ease up. The gauges tell you more than any weight threshold can, because grades, altitude, ambient temp, and vehicle weight all interact in ways no single number can capture.

Coolant Temp

Coolant temperature is usually the least dramatic of the three. Modern diesel cooling systems handle hard work well. A well-maintained system should hold steady temps even under sustained tow load. Creeping coolant is worth noting, but rarely the first alarm.

If your coolant is climbing while EGTs are also climbing, pull over and let things settle. Both rising together usually means you’re asking for more than the system can shed on that grade at that speed.

A Practical Approach for Pass Climbing

Before a long grade, drop to a tune level where you know the throttle response is clean and predictable. If you need the extra power for the climb, pre-cool the trans on the flat section before — if it’s already warm going into the grade, it hits its limit sooner.

Some drivers drop one tune level just for a mountain section and switch back on the flat. It takes ten seconds. The engine doesn’t care. The trans cares quite a bit.

Target a speed you can hold without the trans hunting, even if that speed is a few mph below what you’d run on flat ground. Steady state at a lower speed beats a gear-hunting, EGT-spiking crawl at highway speed every time.
