Supplemental Braking for Flat-Towed Vehicles: State Laws, System Types, and When Great Motorhome Brakes Aren’t Enough
Most states require supplemental braking on your toad — and your Jeep almost certainly qualifies
If you’re flat-towing a Jeep Wrangler behind a motorhome, supplemental braking is legally required in most of the country. Weight thresholds that trigger the requirement vary by state — as low as 1,500 lbs in California and 3,000 lbs in many others — but a four-door Wrangler starts around 4,200 lbs. It clears the legal bar in nearly every state. Michigan and Massachusetts set their limits at 10,000 and 15,000 lbs respectively, and Kentucky has no specific weight requirement, but everywhere else you’re inside the law’s reach the moment you hook up a Wrangler.
For multi-state travel, that adds up fast. More importantly, in a collision where your towed vehicle didn’t have an operable system it was legally required to have, your insurance exposure shifts in ways that have nothing to do with whose fault the accident was.
Portable vs. permanently installed: the real trade-off
All supplemental braking systems fall into one of two camps. The choice mostly comes down to how often you unhitch mid-trip and whether you ever move the system between vehicles.
Portable systems
The Brake Buddy Classic is the most recognized name. It sits in the driver’s footwell, uses an inertia sensor to detect deceleration, and actuates the toad’s brake pedal at a preset intensity. Setup takes a few minutes each time — position the unit, connect the breakaway cable to the motorhome, arm the system. That routine is exactly what drives people to leave it in the storage bay.
The Classic uses preset (non-proportional) braking: it applies a fixed force regardless of how hard you’re braking in the coach. Other portable options like the Blue Ox Patriot apply proportional force — braking harder on the toad when you’re braking harder up front. Still requires setup at the start of each tow leg, but proportional response is generally better in real-world mixed braking situations.
Portability is the genuine upside. If you own two towable vehicles, or you borrow or rent different coaches, a portable system moves with you without another installation.
Permanently installed systems
This is where daily frustration disappears. A permanently installed system lives in the toad, activates automatically, and requires nothing from you at hookup time beyond flipping a switch or plugging in a connector.
Two systems dominate this category:
- SMI Stay-In-Play Duo (Demco): Mounts under the hood and uses a combination of vacuum and air pressure to engage the toad’s existing brake hardware. Its key design feature is dual activation — it requires both deceleration AND a brake-light signal from the motorhome before it fires. That dual-input requirement prevents false triggering on long downhill grades. After installation, hookup is: switch it on.
- Roadmaster Invisibrake: Fits in an 8x8x2-inch footprint, typically hidden under the driver’s seat or behind interior panels. Uses a vacuum pump to power the brake booster and a cable to physically depress the brake pedal. Response is proportional — the longer the motorhome brakes, the harder the toad brakes. It also trickle-charges the toad’s battery during towing, which prevents the dead-battery surprise that catches a lot of flat towers off guard.
Both include a breakaway feature that applies the toad’s brakes if the tow bar separates. Both have been in the field long enough to have a real-world track record.
Why ‘my motorhome has great brakes’ doesn’t close the argument
A diesel pusher with air brakes genuinely does stop well. But supplemental toad braking isn’t just about stopping distance — it’s about three separate things that get rolled into one.
First, the physics. A 4,000-lb Jeep at highway speed that isn’t braking adds real distance to your stopping run in a hard stop, even behind a well-braked Class A. The exact number depends on speed and surface, but it isn’t zero.
Second, the breakaway scenario. If the tow bar fails or a safety cable snaps, an unbraked toad keeps rolling. Every supplemental braking system on the market includes a breakaway circuit specifically for this situation.
Third — and this is the one most people underestimate — the liability question. If you’re in a collision and reconstruction shows the toad had no active braking where the law required it, that fact doesn’t disappear because the motorhome stops well. Insurance adjusters and attorneys are not sympathetic to that argument, and the DP’s air brakes won’t come up.
If setup friction is the actual problem, solve that
Skipping supplemental brakes because the Brake Buddy Classic is annoying to configure is solving the wrong problem. The fix is a permanently installed system, not no system. Installation at a trailer shop runs a few hundred dollars in labor on top of the unit cost. A lot of owners do it themselves in a day if they’re comfortable with basic electrical and vacuum-line work.
Once it’s in, hookup takes about 30 seconds. The Classic stays home for good.
If portability genuinely matters — multiple towable vehicles, a shared system — a newer proportional portable unit is a step up from the Classic’s preset braking. You still deal with setup, but the braking behavior is better matched to how people actually drive. Either way, the one thing that isn’t a real option is leaving the system on the shelf because setup is inconvenient.
