How to Repair Fiberglass Shock-Corded Tent Poles: Cord and Segment Fixes

Two fixes, one afternoon

Fiberglass shock-corded tent poles fail in two ways: the elastic cord goes slack so the sections barely pull together, or a segment cracks and won’t bear load. Both are repairable at home. You don’t need the manufacturer’s help, and you don’t need a new tent.

What you’ll need

  • Replacement shock cord — 1/8-inch diameter elastic bungee cord fits most tent poles
  • A thin metal wire at least as long as the assembled pole
  • Needle-nose pliers and locking pliers
  • Electrical tape or masking tape
  • Scissors or a sharp knife
  • For broken segments: a pole repair sleeve (a short aluminum tube that slides over the break)

Shock cord is sold by the foot at most outdoor retailers. Repair sleeves often ship with the tent, but brands like Coghlan’s sell them separately. Get a sleeve diameter that fits snugly over your pole without slop.

Replacing a stretched or broken shock cord

This is the most common repair. When the cord loses tension, sections sag apart instead of snapping together. Budget about 30 minutes.

Step 1: Label and disassemble

Lay the pole out straight on a flat surface. Number the sections in order with a permanent marker — start at one tip and count to the other end. Don’t skip this step. Mixing up the order puts narrower ferrule ends in the wrong places, and the pole won’t seat right on reassembly.

Cut or untie the knot at one tip, then slide all sections off the old cord. Keep them in numbered order as you go. Photograph the tip orientation if you’re uncertain you’ll remember it.

Step 2: Measure and cut the new cord

Match the old cord’s length, then cut it noticeably shorter — the cord needs to sit under constant tension when the pole is assembled, not just reach from one end to the other. A cord that equals the pole’s assembled length will feel floppy from day one. Too short and sections won’t align; too long and they won’t snap. A good working target is to cut roughly 10 percent off the measured length and adjust from there.

Step 3: Thread the wire, then the cord

This is where most people struggle. Feed the metal wire through all the pole sections in numbered order. Then tape about an inch of the new cord’s end firmly to one end of the wire and pull the wire back out — the cord follows it straight through.

Without the wire, you’re trying to push an elastic through a narrow tube. It catches, bunches, and goes nowhere. The wire makes it trivial.

Step 4: Tie off and test

Tie a solid overhand knot at one end of the cord and seat it inside the pole tip. Stretch the cord taut along the assembled sections, clamp the far end with locking pliers to stop it retracting, then tie the second knot at the other tip.

Release the pliers. Sections should snap together cleanly. Still feels loose? Cut a little more off and retie.

Repairing a cracked or broken segment

Gluing splintered fiberglass doesn’t hold. Under compression the crack re-opens. A sleeve is the right fix.

How a sleeve repair works

A repair sleeve is a short aluminum tube, slightly wider than your pole, that slides over the break and bridges it. Not elegant. Works well and holds through a season of regular use.

Steps

  1. Disassemble the pole as above and identify the damaged section.
  2. If it snapped cleanly, butt the two halves together and center the sleeve over the break.
  3. If it splintered badly, cut away the ruined portion with a fine-tooth saw and use the sleeve as a structural bridge. You’ll lose a small amount of pole length — rarely enough to affect pitching.
  4. Some sleeves friction-fit; others need a drop of epoxy inside to stay put. If you use epoxy, let it cure fully before threading the new cord.
  5. Reassemble and restring the shock cord using the steps above.

When to replace the whole section instead

Many tent manufacturers sell individual pole sections as spare parts. If your tent is a current model, check the brand’s website or contact customer support — a factory section drops straight in and usually costs less than you’d expect. For discontinued tents or brands that won’t sell parts, the sleeve repair is your practical option.

Small things that cause big headaches

Cord diameter matters. Too thin and there’s not enough tension; too thick and it won’t thread through the pole sections. The 1/8-inch standard covers most backpacking and car-camping tent poles, but hold the old cord next to the new one before cutting anything.

Knot placement matters too. If the knot sits proud of the pole tip instead of recessing inside it, the tip cap won’t seat and the section wobbles on its neighbor. Tie small, pull tight, tuck it in.

And take photos before disassembly. Knowing which end had the longer segment and how each tip was oriented saves real confusion when putting it back together.
