Swapping the OEM rivets for bolts on the Ford Transit 250’s spare tire mechanism is a small change that pays off every time you need to service the hoist. Here’s how the system works, what parts you need, and why bolts make more sense than Ford’s factory fasteners.

The Rivet Problem

Ford rivets the spare tire winch housing in place from the factory — four rivets, set from inside the van floor. They hold fine. The problem shows up the first time you need to pull the mechanism for cable service or a winch repair.

Drilling out rivets is manageable in a shop with good lighting and steady hands. On a road shoulder, or when you just want to inspect the cable, it’s a frustrating extra step. Rivets are also single-use fasteners: remove them and you need replacements, a rivet gun, and access from inside the van just to put everything back. Bolts eliminate that whole sequence.

How the Transit Spare Tire System Works

The 2021 Ford Transit 250 stores the spare underneath the van, suspended on a cable-and-drum winch housed in a bracket on the floor structure. To retrieve the tire, insert a 1/2-inch drive ratchet with a long extension into the floor access point and turn counterclockwise — the cable unwinds and the tire lowers to the ground. Clockwise raises it back.

The winch housing is the piece that gets bolted or riveted to the van floor. When it comes out, you can inspect the cable for fraying, service the drum, and apply lubricant before reinstalling.

One rule Ford’s manual is explicit about: never wind the hoist without a tire on it. The cable’s end-stop can get pulled into the drum if there’s no weight on the line, and retrieving it is a much bigger job than you want.
