Swapping the Upfitter Switch Panel Into a Non-Upfitter Ford Overhead Console

It depends on your console shell — here is how to find out

Plenty of Ford Super Duty overhead consoles share the same plastic shell whether or not the truck left the factory with upfitter switches. The non-upfitter version simply has a blank plate covering an opening that’s already molded in. If that’s your console, the switch section transplants cleanly with no cutting. If it’s a different shell — no pre-formed cavity — you’d need to fabricate an opening, and most people don’t go that route.

That single detail determines whether this is a bolt-in job or a more involved build. Here’s how to work through the rest of it.

What the upfitter system actually consists of

Before pulling anything apart, it helps to know what you’re dealing with. Three separate components make up the factory upfitter system:

  • The switch panel in the overhead console — six labeled toggles, typically
  • A dedicated wiring harness that runs from the console through the A-pillar and into the engine bay
  • An auxiliary relay box mounted in the engine compartment on the driver’s side

The switches don’t carry the load directly. Each toggle sends a low-current signal to the relay box, which then switches a higher-current circuit. Six blunt-cut wires exit the relay box — one per switch — and those are the points you connect your accessories to. The relay box also includes per-circuit internal fusing, with Aux 5 and Aux 6 configurable between ignition-controlled and always-hot depending on which fuse position you use.

Checking physical fitment on the destination console

Ford Super Duty overhead consoles come in a lot of configurations — trim level, interior color, sunroof, rear sliding window. Two consoles that look nearly identical from the outside can have completely different part numbers and different shells.

The fastest check is to pull the part number from your non-upfitter console and compare it to the upfitter console PN for the same year and trim. If the shell number matches, the cavity is there. If the numbers diverge early in the sequence, there’s a reasonable chance the mold is different.

A Ford dealer can pull this up from your VIN. Online VIN decoders for the Super Duty also surface build data, and forum parts threads for your specific model year often have comparison tables showing which console shells are shared across upfitter and non-upfitter builds.

The wiring harness

This is where most people spend the most time. The harness carries all the upfitter switch circuits, handles the rear slider connection, and in some years incorporates the collision avoidance camera cable. It runs from the overhead console to a plug point at the A-pillar base, then continues into the engine compartment to the relay box.

One important detail: a lot of Super Dutys that weren’t ordered with upfitters were still pre-wired for them at the factory. Before assuming you need to run new wire, check the A-pillar in the destination truck for a capped connector. If it’s there, the harness plugs straight in.

Documented installs on 2023+ models show around five connectors total — three at the overhead console, one for the rear window slider circuit, and one near the windshield base. Sourcing the correct harness PN for your specific year matters. Wrong harnesses often have the right connectors but wrong routing or lengths, which creates its own headaches. Adding the relay box if it’s not already there

A truck that wasn’t ordered with upfitters won’t have the auxiliary relay box. It mounts on the driver’s side of the engine compartment and needs a fused power feed. Owners who’ve done this install typically run a dedicated line from the under-hood fuse box using an add-a-fuse tap, or run direct to the battery through an inline mega fuse. The relay box itself has per-circuit internal fusing, but the supply line to the box needs its own overcurrent protection regardless.

Don’t skip the mega fuse on a direct-to-battery run. The relay box can draw through all six circuits simultaneously at peak load, and an unfused wire that chafes through under the hood is a fire hazard.

The rear window switch

The rear slider switch runs on its own circuit, separate from the six upfitter channels. As long as the harness you’re transplanting includes the rear window circuit — and most do — it carries over without issue. Just confirm the connector on the destination console matches what’s coming off the harness. In most configurations it’s the same connector.

Practical checklist before you start

  • Look up the PN on your non-upfitter console and verify whether it shares a shell with the upfitter version for the same year and trim
  • Check the A-pillar in the target truck for a factory-capped upfitter connector — its presence means the truck was pre-wired even without the switch option being ordered
  • Source the correct harness part number for your model year before ordering anything — wrong harness is the most common mistake on this job
  • Budget for the relay box and mounting hardware if the truck doesn’t already have one
  • Decide on Aux 5 and Aux 6 fuse position (ignition-keyed vs. always-hot) before finalizing the install

The salvage yard option

Some people skip the section swap altogether and pull a complete upfitter overhead console from a salvage yard or Ford parts counter. If the color and options match, swapping the entire console is often cleaner — you get the switch panel, the correct harness pigtail, and the lighting circuit as one unit. The relay box and under-hood wiring still need to be sorted separately, but the console side of the job becomes plug-and-play. Worth pricing out before spending hours tracking down individual section part numbers.
