WJ Rims on a WK Grand Cherokee: What Actually Fits and What to Watch For

The Short Answer

WJ (1999–2004) and WK (2005–2010) Grand Cherokees both use a 5×127 mm bolt pattern, so the wheels will mount. Whether they’ll actually clear everything behind them is a different question — and it depends heavily on which WK you have.

Why Brake Clearance Is the Real Issue

The WK came with larger front brake hardware on certain trim levels. Overland models and some Limiteds got Brembo calipers from the factory, and those calipers sit further outboard than the brake packages on any WJ. A WJ wheel that drops right onto a base-spec WK with no drama can sit dangerously close to — or straight up contact — a Brembo caliper on the same year WK in a higher trim.

This is the swap’s most common failure point. Check your trim level before assuming the driveway test is just a formality.

Hub Bore

Both the WJ and WK share a 71.5 mm center bore, so hub-centric fit is typically not an issue with factory or quality aftermarket wheels designed for either platform. That said, if you’re running older WJ wheels that have been on and off multiple times, eyeball the bore for damage. A wheel that can’t seat hub-centric will vibrate at speed — and on a heavy SUV, that gets old fast.

Offset Matters Too

Factory WJ and WK wheels don’t share identical offsets across all sizes and trims. Too much positive offset pushes the wheel inboard and reduces caliper clearance further. Too much negative offset throws the wheel outward past the fender arch. Check the offset stamped on the back of your WJ wheels and compare it against your WK’s factory spec — your door jamb sticker or owner’s manual will have it. A few millimeters of difference is usually fine; a large mismatch is worth addressing before you drive.

How to Do the Driveway Test Right

Jack the front end up and pull one factory wheel. Mount one of the WJ wheels in its place and snug the lug nuts down. Spin it slowly by hand and watch the gap between the inner face of the wheel and the caliper body. You want clear daylight — not just barely-not-touching. Static clearance shrinks under load and suspension travel, so if it’s already marginal on a lifted axle it will contact when the truck settles.

Do the same at the rear. Less drama there usually, but backspacing differences can cause inner fender rub under compression.

If the Fit Is Too Tight

Hub-centric wheel spacers in the 5–15 mm range push the wheel face away from the caliper without changing your bolt pattern. Use hub-centric spacers specifically — they locate on the hub register and don’t introduce vibration the way generic slip-on spacers can. On a vehicle this heavy, bolt-on spacers with extended studs are the cleaner choice for anything thicker than about 5 mm.

Spacers also add a small amount of track width. On the WK’s body that’s rarely a problem and some people prefer the slightly wider stance.

One More Thing to Check

Lug seat type. WJ factory wheels used a conical (tapered) lug seat; if your WJ wheels are aftermarket, confirm they match the seat type your WK lug nuts expect. Using a conical nut on a radius-seat wheel — or vice versa — means the wheel is not actually clamped correctly even if the nut torques down. It’ll come loose. This catches people off guard more often than the brake clearance does.
