Are New Trucks Really Junk? Why Recalls Feel Constant and What the Data Shows

The complaint shows up in every recall thread without fail: new trucks are garbage, they don’t build them like they used to, everything is cheap plastic and buggy software. It’s worth taking those concerns seriously. It’s also worth checking whether the evidence backs them up — and for the most part, it doesn’t.

Three distinct forces are working together to make modern trucks look worse than they are, and none of them are really about build quality.

NHTSA Changed the Rules

The biggest driver of rising recall numbers isn’t declining quality — it’s tighter federal oversight. After the Firestone tire disaster in 2000, Congress passed the Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act, which handed NHTSA significantly more authority to push manufacturers toward early action on potential defects. Then came the Takata airbag crisis — the largest automotive safety recall in history, spanning tens of millions of vehicles across 19 automakers — and the standards tightened further.

Industry analysts have described the shift plainly: over the past 10 to 15 years, problems that once would have been resolved through quiet service bulletins now trigger formal recalls. That’s a genuine win for safety. It’s also why the recall count looks so alarming compared to 1985.

In 2025, over 30 million vehicles were recalled in the U.S. across nearly 1,000 separate issues. Ford alone logged 153 recalls that year, affecting close to 13 million vehicles. Those numbers sound catastrophic. But a significant share of those are proactive fixes for potential problems — not vehicles that are actively failing on the road.

The Internet Turned the Volume All the Way Up

Before online forums and social media, you found out about a recall when a postcard arrived in your mailbox, if you were lucky. Now a single recall hits every truck forum, YouTube channel, and social feed simultaneously within hours of the announcement.

Research from the University of Washington found that social media doesn’t just spread recall news — it amplifies the damage well beyond the brand involved. Other manufacturers that had nothing to do with the problem get pulled into the negative conversation anyway. The researchers found that chatter sparked by a rival’s recall erased an average of $7.3 million from an innocent competitor’s market cap over just six days. One study of a Toyota Corolla recall found it generated negative sentiment around the Tacoma, Prius, and RAV4 — and also dinged Honda and Nissan, which had clean records.

The practical effect: your sense of how often trucks fail is shaped partly by how fast bad news travels, not just by what’s actually breaking.

What J.D. Power’s Numbers Actually Say

The 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study recorded 202 problems per 100 vehicles — the highest rate since 2009, up 6% from the prior year. That stat circulates as proof that quality is in free fall. The detail that rarely makes the headline: the spike was driven almost entirely by infotainment and connectivity systems.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay issues climbed to 8.4 problems per 100 vehicles, up from 6.3 the year before. Built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi added more. Core mechanical systems (engines, transmissions, drivelines) have generally moved in the right direction. Modern full-size trucks run 8-, 9-, and 10-speed automatic transmissions that are more durable and fuel-efficient than the 3-speed units that were standard 40 years ago. Towing ratings, payload capacity, and real-world fuel economy have all improved.

The problem isn’t the truck. It’s the touchscreen.

Old Trucks Look Better Than They Actually Were

The trucks from the 1970s and 1980s still driving around today are the survivors. Every truck that blew a head gasket in year three, seized at 60,000 miles, or rusted through in a Wisconsin winter is long gone — crushed, scrapped, or stripped for parts decades ago. Nobody counts those when comparing eras.

What’s left is a curated highlight reel of that generation’s best examples. Comparing a pristine survivor-spec 1978 F-150 to an average 2024 F-150 isn’t a fair contest. You’re measuring the cream of 1978 production against the full distribution of 2024 trucks, failures included. Survivorship bias is a well-documented cognitive trap, and it hits especially hard with old vehicles — time has already done the quality selection for us.

Model Year Still Matters More Than the Nameplate

None of this means every new truck is equally dependable. Consumer Reports and Edmunds data show wide gaps within the same brand, sometimes within the same model generation.

  • The Toyota Tacoma has historically ranked well for long-term reliability, though its move to a new 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in 2024 brought early teething issues common to any fresh powertrain.
  • The Chevrolet Silverado HD ranked first in its segment in J.D. Power’s 2025 heavy-duty pickup category.
  • Ford climbed 10 spots in that same study after tightening its pre-production testing protocols — a 10-spot jump in one year is not a small thing.

When you’re shopping, pull the model-year-specific reliability scores for the exact truck you’re considering, not just the badge. A 2022 and a 2025 version of the same truck can score very differently, and that gap matters a lot more than any broad claim about whether old or new is better.
